Legacy>Currency

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

In our society, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of wealth and material possessions. We work long hours and make sacrifices in order to earn more money and accumulate more things. However, in the end, it's not our net worth that truly matters. Instead, it's the legacy that we leave behind that truly defines our lives.

The quote "Legacy is better than currency" was coined by Gary Vaynerchuk, one of my favorite “tell it like it is” business and entrepreneurship professionals. We both believe that legacy is what truly matters in life, and that building a lasting impact is more important than accumulating wealth. This is a powerful message, especially in a society that often values financial success above all else.

Ultimately, building a legacy is about living a life of purpose and meaning.

Legacy can take many forms, but at its core, it's about the impact we make on the world around us. It's about the memories we create, the lives we touch, and the positive change we bring about. A legacy can be something as simple as the relationships we build with our loved ones, or as complex as a large-scale philanthropic initiative. It's about leaving the world a better place than we found it.

In contrast, currency is simply a means to an end. While money can provide us with comfort and security, it's not the key to a fulfilling life. In fact, studies have shown that beyond a certain point, increased wealth does not lead to increased happiness. Once our basic needs are met, it's the non-material things in life that truly bring us joy and fulfillment.

So, how can we prioritize legacy over currency in our own lives? One way is to focus on creating meaningful relationships with others. We are social creatures and are all on this timeline together. Focusing on the long-lasting, not the short-term. Times where you would describe as “satisfying” when looking back. If you are looking for a primer start here Motivation for Motivation.

Ultimately, building a legacy is about living a life of purpose and meaning. It's about leaving behind a positive impact that will endure long after we're gone. While accumulating wealth and material possessions may feel satisfying in the short term, it's the legacy we leave behind that truly defines our lives. It's a message that we would all do well to remember as we navigate our own paths in life.

Until next time.
